Viewers of the Paris Olympics on TV will be able to relive every exciting event moment through multi-angle 3D-reconstructed scenes
For the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic games, the limited liability firm Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) has invested in tech innovation to allow sports fans watching the games on their TVs to enjoy views from multiple angles.
Through the deployment of specialized video processing within both edge computing and Cloud environments, footage captured from strategically-positioned cameras around the Olympics venues will be transformed into cloud-based 3D models with high-quality textures. This enables the creation of virtual scenes from new viewpoints that provide a more-immersive and cohesive 3D reconstruction of the competition scenes.
First introduced at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 for curling and speed skating events, the multi-camera replay system was used to immerse fans in the action, allowing them to experience critical competition moments from a variety of optimal angles. With more AI features such as machine learning, deep neural networks and high speed connectivity, fans of the Olympics this year will be able to enjoy multi-camera replay in more competition scenarios: the feature will be implemented at 12 competition venues for events such as beach volleyball, tennis, judo and rugby.
The multi-angle video content will be made available through OBS’s production system, enriching coverage of the Olympic Games through cloud broadcasting with a range of dynamic and lifelike replay footage for global media rights holders.
In an earlier press release, OBS had highlighted its use of a “versatile suite of cloud-based tools enabling live signal distribution, remote production, and unmatched flexibility. Technology has enabled OBS to achieve ‘more with less’, offering broadcasters smarter, more agile, and highly efficient solutions while drastically reducing physical space and power demands at the venues and the IBC. As a result, Paris 2024 stands to benefit from substantial cost savings.”
According to Selina Yuan, President, International Business, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, technology partner for the multi-angle video features: the collaboration stands to “elevate sports broadcasting to new levels of immersion and engagement. As a pioneer in delivering intelligent sports solutions, we aim to work with OBS to redefine how global sports enthusiasts experience and engage with the Olympic Games.”
