From startup to global enterprise: How Canva is preparing for the AI era

A unified data platform now empowers the firm to personalize services, accelerate innovation, and optimize operations amid global expansion plans.

Over the years, as visual communication platform Canva evolved from a fast-growing startup into a global business with over 230m monthly active users, the firm was facing the challenge of managing massive and rapidly increasing volumes of data.

This data complexity had been compounded by Canva’s expansion into enterprise markets, where the need for personalized experiences and agile product innovation had become even more critical.

To address these challenges, Canva was announced on 2 June 2025 to have implemented a unified data cloud platform that could scale with its growth and support its ambitions in the AI era.

By consolidating data from multiple sources, Canva is able to gain a holistic view of user behavior, enabling it to deliver tailored experiences and drive more informed decision-making.

Key principles of the transformation include:

  • Leveraging advanced analytics and AI to power features such as personalized design recommendations and granular customer segmentation
  • Optimizing data-driven approaches to marketing and sales operations to predict customer lifetime value, and to validate new product features efficiently before release
  • Using its AI data cloud platform to accelerate its product roadmap, improve marketing returns-on-investments, and support its enterprise expansion

Said the firm’s Director of Data Science, Moe Kiss: “As our user base expanded, so did the complexity and volume of data. Having a reliable data foundation has been crucial for us to understand the needs of our users and to make informed product decisions as we continue to innovate across our visual communication platform.”

The underlying data cloud platform supporting Canva’s transformation is provided by Snowflake, whose Industry Principal (Marketing and Advertising), Erin Foxworthy, noted: “By putting user insights at the center of their decision-making process, they’ve created a platform that delights hundreds of millions while building a thriving enterprise business.”

Looking the two firms are exploring new opportunities and features to further deepen their technical integration, enabling users to more seamlessly transform data into compelling visual output within Canva.
