One media op-ed notes: Researchers lack definitive tests, while chatbots’ human-like conduct raises ethical questions over attachment, manipulation, responsibilities, and rights
Debate over whether advanced AI systems could possess consciousness is gaining attention in both scientific research and public discourse.
In an 22 August 2026 leader briefing, The Economist characterized the subject as an increasingly heated argument about AI consciousness, rather than a merely speculative philosophical question.
One focal point is whether certain technical features in modern AI resemble mechanisms proposed in scientific accounts of human consciousness. The publication pointed to the concept of a “global workspace” — a model in which information becomes broadly available across otherwise specialized processes.
Some large language model architectures may implement functions with superficial or partial similarities to this kind of information sharing. However, resemblance to a proposed cognitive mechanism does not establish subjective experience.
Another point: AI firms have begun experimenting with model behavior that touches on ethical or welfare-related questions, such as reflecting on aspects of its own responses, in order to exhibit specific levels of accepted conduct when facing unfamiliar circumstances. Protections have been added to let chatbots disengage from abusive interactions. Such choices can be read as precautionary measures, although they are not evidence that any model is sentient.
Arguments for better AI consciousness testing
The main scientific obstacle is much more fundamental: researchers still lack an agreed explanation of consciousness itself. A May 2026 paper posted on [arXiv] argues that determining whether AI is conscious remains intractable under present conditions, in part because there is no universally accepted theory from which to derive a decisive test. - In an 20 August 2026 essay for The Economist, philosopher Susan Schneider likewise cautioned against conflating a chatbot’s apparent intelligence or reasoning ability with conscious, first person experience. Some scholars are therefore favoring assessments that weigh evidence across several competing theories of consciousness rather than searching for a universal pass-or-fail benchmark.
- A study discussed in June 2026 concluded that the apparent consciousness of large language models does not arise in a manner sufficiently comparable to humans to justify assigning conscious states to them. At the same time, its authors did not rule out the possibility that future AI systems, potentially built on very different architectures, could become conscious.
- The societal dimension complicates the issue. As AI products become more capable and more woven into work, education, and personal life, developers may intentionally make them seem emotionally aware and self-directed — or, in a more uncertain scenario, create systems that genuinely have morally relevant experiences.
Overall, the concern is not simply that people may incorrectly anthropomorphize AI. If increasingly persuasive systems cause users to question whether they are interacting with conscious beings, society could face difficult choices about attachment, manipulation, moral responsibility, and potential rights, according to the briefing.
