Malaysian supermarket chain MYDIN boosts scalability by seven times through digitalization

Malaysian supermarket chain MYDIN boosts scalability by seven times through digitalization

By upgrading to a cost-effective cloud-based WMS and complementing it with enterprise-class Android gadgets, the firm is ready for further growth

The Malaysian e-commerce market is one of the fastest-growing in South-east Asia, and one of the largest halal-certified hypermarket retail chains in the country is Mydin Mohamed Holdings Berhad (MYDIN), which runs 68 branches nationwide.

The firm has a distribution center in Seremban, but its previous infrastructure was unable to keep up with the fast-growing business.

Said its Director of IT, HR, Digital and Loss Prevention & Security, Malik Bin Murad Ali: “Previously, our e-commerce business could only support about 1,500 daily orders,” but with a new warehouse productivity solution in place “we now complete more than 10,000 orders (a seven-fold boost) daily… and constantly look for ways to gain better operational productivity to improve our customer experience. This is why we are equipping our front-line staff with more advanced technology tools to drive better results.”

How did the new system boost the firm’s scalability to handle strong growth by seven times, and keep customer service quality high? First, the solution package included a series of mobile warehousing devices which allowed frontline workers at the distribution center to ensure task accuracy and on-the-job efficiency. The Android-based devices are equipped with enterprise-class durability and removable batteries for dependable around-the-clock operations, and the power to run all the applications needed at work.

Additionally, a cloud-native warehouse management system (WMS) was part of the solution. This integrated WMS offered cost-effective features such as no code programmability, auto upgrades at no additional cost, zero server costs, turnkey REST API integration, and other smart functions that fit into MYDIN’s need for economically improving scalability and customer service quality.

According to Kym Lim, Country Manager (Malaysia and Brunei), Zebra Technologies, the provider of the mobile warehouse productivity devices: “As consumers increasingly demand seamless omnichannel experiences, MYDIN and other retailers can provide these experiences by adopting the right technology to digitalize and automate workflows.”
