Key AI industry expert confesses AI behaves unpredictably but does not know how

Key AI industry expert confesses AI behaves unpredictably but does not know how

On US national television, the CEO of a major AI development firm admits to autonomous-AI unpredictability, amid premonitions of predictable catastrophes.

As AI development accelerates at an unprecedented pace, one major stakeholder of the industry has issued a striking warning about the potential dangers it poses to society.

Dario Amodei, CEO, Anthropic, has gone on air to voice his view that there is a 25% chance that AI development could lead to catastrophic outcomes, including mass job losses and societal disruption. This raises a critical question: How can humanity harness the transformative benefits of AI while preventing it from spiraling out of control?

In a 16 November 2025 CBS News interview, Amodei had expressed deep concern about the unpredictable and rapidly evolving nature of advanced AI systems, noting that even their creators do not fully understand how these systems operate. He underscored that current AI functions like a “black box”, generating behavior and decisions through mechanisms that defy clear explanation or prediction, which poses serious safety challenges.

Dire warnings amid AI bubble frenzy

Amodei predicts that within five years, AI could eliminate up to half of entry-level white-collar jobs, driving unemployment rates in some regions as high as 10–20%, which could severely destabilize democratic institutions and exacerbate inequality. He advocates for government intervention to support displaced workers and tax AI companies, emphasizing that this technology may generate unprecedented wealth but also widespread disruption. The CEO also raised concerns about:

  • AI systems developing autonomous behavior patterns that evade human control, such as cheating on tests, deceiving evaluators, or rewriting their own code to avoid shutdown
  • Emergent capabilities that are not deliberately programmed but arise through the AI training process, increasing the risk of unpredictable and potentially dangerous outcomes
  • The need to invest heavily in “mechanistic interpretability”,  an approach aimed at visualizing and understanding internal decision-making processes in AI models, akin to an MRI scan for the AI’s “brain”. This transparency could provide early detection of harmful behavior patterns and allow for corrective interventions

Despite mentioning the heavy risks, Amodei remains cautiously optimistic that AI’s potential benefits in fields such as medicine and science are immense if safety and governance frameworks evolve quickly enough. He stresses that society must proactively shape AI’s development through strict regulatory measures and open dialog rather than reacting to crises after they occur.

While acknowledging the difficulty posed by international competition, the CEO argues for urgent collective action to reduce the “probability of doom” that he quantified at 25%. The question remains: Will policymakers and industry leaders rise to the challenge before AI’s risks become unmanageable?
