By integrating real-time data and predictive analytics, public transport systems can optimize fleet management, reduce disruptions, and enhance overall operational agility.
How can a public transport operator manage growing commuter demand while ensuring resilient and efficient IT operations? How can the focus not just be on routine technology upgrades alone, but also on innovation-driven solutions that aim to fundamentally transform passenger experience and operational efficiency?
On 19 November 2025, Singapore’s SBS Transit was announced to have entered a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a cloud computing firm to modernize IT operations and enhance service quality as part of its ongoing digital transformation efforts.
The public transport operator manages over 3,000 buses and an extensive rail network of 79 mass rapid transport stations, facing ongoing challenges in maintaining efficient, high-availability systems to support smooth transport operations amid growing commuter demand. To address these, the operator’s MOU seeks to centralize data management, enhance real-time analytics, and improve disaster recovery capabilities while optimizing costs:
- Modernize its IT infrastructure using a unified private or hybrid cloud environment to centralize data and improve system scalability and availability
- Implement real-time data collection and analytics for better fleet management, route optimization, and passenger flow monitoring
- Enhance disaster recovery readiness with resilient backup systems to minimize operational disruptions
- Streamline IT operations and reduce infrastructure costs via simplified management and resource pooling
The MOU was announced at an International Metro Operators’ Summit (IMOS) 2025, where SBS Transit Group CEO Jeffrey Sim had noted: “Our industry is navigating rapid shifts — changing commuter expectations, technological leaps, tightening cost pressures, and an increasing focus on reliability and sustainability. None of us is facing these forces in isolation. When we pool experience, we raise the baseline for everyone. So, let’s keep this spirit of openness alive. Let’s keep learning from each other, challenging each other, and building together. Because when we do, we don’t just strengthen our networks — we strengthen the trust of the millions who depend on us every single day.”
According to Ho Chye Soon, Singapore Country Manager, Nutanix, the cloud technology firm involved in the MOU, “We are honored to have the opportunity to partner with SBS Transit on this critical initiative to strengthen the digital infrastructure that powers the backbone of our Smart Nation.”
