Singapore firm Sin Chew Woodpaq recognized for tech efforts to boost workplace safety

Singapore firm Sin Chew Woodpaq recognized for tech efforts to boost workplace safety

Having imbibed a company-wide culture of continual digitalization, the firm has always been tapping into technology for its employees’ well-being

Starting off as a manufacturer of wooden cases 50 years ago, a Singapore firm has since expanded into providing integrated project logistics solutions.

Today, Sin Chew Woodpaq offers specialized solutions in heavy and sensitive machinery moving and packing; design and engineering; customized wooden crating/jacking and skidding across a wide range of industries.

Driven by a mindset of continuous transformation, the firm has embraced automation and digitalization to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and deliver even greater value to its customers. On 21 Oct 2024, the firm announced it was recognized by the government with a Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Tech Award for its continuous efforts in prioritizing and enhancing safety practices. This includes implementing an AI-enabled “safe driving management system” across its entire fleet to reinforce its strong safety protocols.

The system features advanced 24/7 dash cams that monitor driver behavior in real-time using ML and facial recognition to detects critical events such as hard braking, speeding, distracted driving, and signs of fatigue. When risky behavior is identified, the system provides immediate visual and audio alerts, enabling prompt corrective actions.

Additionally, a hands-free communication feature facilitates seamless interaction between drivers and controllers, minimizing distractions and enhancing road safety. This comprehensive approach has significantly reduced incidents, with Sin Chew reporting an 80% decrease in potential causes, particularly those related to distracted driving.

The detailed reports generated by the system provide valuable insights into driving patterns, allowing the firm to implement targeted safety initiatives. These efforts have improved driver safety and led to cost savings from reduced repair costs, lowered insurance premiums, and minimization of operational downtime.

Sin Chew Woodpaq is also committed to continually improving its safety measures by regular enhancements of protocols, training programs and investments in state-of-the-art safety equipment. Comprehensive wellness initiatives are also in the pipeline to improve the holistic well-being of all employees.

According to the firm’s General Manager (Operations and Safety), Kumaran: “Our dedication to safety drives us to continuously improve our practices and technologies. These efforts are aimed at creating an even safer and more secure environment for all our employees.”
