Here is a case study of Star Energy Geothermal’s first-mover advantage in leveraging the national growth and digitalization strategy
In line with the country’s national objective to prioritize long-term economic growth through energy security and digitalization, clean energy transition is a key opportunity for Indonesia to diversify its economy while making its energy supplies more secure and affordable.
This explains why Indonesia’s largest geothermal energy producer and clean energy company has been going all-in on a cloud-native environment to build generative AI (GenAI) into its operations.
On 9 Dec 2024, Barito Renewables had announced through its subsidiary Star Energy Geothermal that it will be adopting an AI-powered open integration platform to enhance its geothermal unit’s IT operations through advanced automation and AIOps capabilities to provide real-time insights into IT system performance; enable proactive problem detection and resolution; enhance system reliability; reduce downtime by predicting failures before they occur; automate IT tasks, streamline workflows and allow teams to focus on strategic initiatives rather than routine maintenance.
Said the firm’s Director and Corporate Secretary, Merly (sic): “Cloud technology is positioning us to be nimbler, better connected, and technologically agile as we face evolving energy market demand and preferences. As the path to the future, it drives innovation, efficiency, and is essential in optimizing operations, reducing costs, and supporting our transition to renewable energy while upholding our commitment to sustainability.”
On-premises IT workloads are moving to the public cloud. This transition brings several implications:
- Reduced operational costs
- Enhanced agility and scalability
- Increases in the firm’s geothermal unit to respond swiftly to changing business needs
- Increased scalability of the newly adopted cloud environment to accommodate technological advancements, market dynamics, and ever-evolving cyber regulations
- Incidental network modernization initiatives focusing on refreshing of technologies and implementing of improvements to enhance network performance, including the adoption of Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN)
- Upgrades to a more scalable and agile unified communication system aimed at improving collaboration and communication within the organization
According to Effendi Azmi Hashim, Managing Director, Kyndryl (Malaysia and Indonesia), the technology partner appointed for the AI digitalization program: “The global energy sector is rapidly evolving using the latest cloud technology, and Barito Renewables is making bold advances to use AI to meet changing business needs. We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Star Energy and look forward to nurturing continued innovation using GenAI and ML.”
