March Windows update inadvertently uninstalls AI Assistant from some computers

Obedient users who rush to apply OS patches promptly sometimes end up paying a heavy price for glitchy software rollouts

An issue with the March 2025 Windows update has been confirmed to inadvertently uninstall the Copilot AI assistant from some Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.

This problem affects users who installed specific cumulative updates, such as KB5053598 for Windows 11 and KB5053606 for Windows 10. Notably, the Microsoft 365 Copilot app remains unaffected by this issue.

Microsoft became aware of the issue after releasing the updates on 11 March 2025, and has since advised users to reinstall the app from the Microsoft Store and manually pin it to the taskbar until a fix is available. This temporary workaround ensures that users can continue to benefit from the AI assistant’s capabilities while a permanent solution is worked out

Apparently, this is not the first time that Copilot has faced issues. In June 2024, Microsoft had had to remove a version of Copilot that was incorrectly installed on some devices by buggy Microsoft Edge updates. The company had assured that this version did not collect or transmit any data, to alleviate privacy concerns. Additionally, Microsoft had faced backlash when Copilot was added to some Windows Server 2025 preview builds, leading to its removal due to user feedback.

The firm is currently working on a new native Copilot app for Windows that will feature an enhanced user interface and a press-to-talk feature. This update is meant to allow users to interact with the assistant using voice commands, similar to how Cortana functioned in Windows 10. More feature details will be unveiled in due course.

Which brings everyone to the dilemma of prompt application of patches and updates: The current saga underscores a familiar tech conundrum: the rush to patch systems often collides with the reality of unpolished releases. As the creators of a seriously buggy patch scrambles to smooth out the wrinkles, users are left weighing the benefits of staying current against the headache of playing guinea pig for yet another glitchy rollout.
