Streaming platform introduces “AI persona” tags

Streaming platform introduces “AI persona” tags

Responding to industry pressure over synthetic content, the platform will leave such entities out of both algorithmic and editorial playlists

In response to the surge of AI content on Spotify, the latter is rolling out a new labeling scheme for AI-created personas and content, and leaving such entities out of both algorithmic and editorial playlists that typically help human performers reach new listeners.

The streaming platform said the labels will first appear on its mobile apps in mid-September, and will be visible in several places: artist profile pages, search results, and the track rows that show up inside playlists. Ahead of that full rollout, the firm is opening a self-reporting option through the Spotify for Artists portal, allowing creators to voluntarily declare that their persona is AI-generated, although the platform stressed that it will not depend solely on self-disclosure to identify these accounts.

The move is framed as a response to clear listener feedback about transparency around who — or what — they are following. “Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated,” the firm said in an announcement, underscoring that users feel misled when they discover that an apparently human performer is actually a synthetic construct. The initiative was reported by Fairfax Media and reflects growing mainstream media interest in how streaming platforms manage AI identities.

Mounting pressure to regulate AI content

To figure out which profiles count as AI personas, Spotify plans to blend human oversight with automated detection tools. Its systems will scan for artist identities whose names and visuals “appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities,” starting with accounts that exceed certain audience thresholds before expanding further.

  • When an artist profile triggers concern, it will be escalated to a review team; if the reviewers conclude that the persona likely represents an AI-generated character, Spotify will attach a “Likely AI Persona” designation and notify the artist, who can then either confirm that status or file an appeal to challenge the label.
  • No badge will go live without human confirmation, even if AI tools did the initial flagging, in order to maintain accuracy and provide due process for affected accounts.
  • Over the coming months, Spotify intends to add a listener reporting feature so users can directly flag profiles they suspect of being AI personas, giving the community a role in policing misrepresentation.
  • The “AI Persona” marker is focused on the public-facing identity of the artist — whether the profile represents a real human being — rather than on whether AI tools were involved in composing, performing, or producing the tracks themselves. “Although there’s a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents an actual human is one where Spotify can help make a clear determination,” the platform noted, signaling that it sees identity verification as a more concrete problem than tracing every instance of AI-assisted composition (source).
  • Other features will continue to highlight when and how AI is involved in making specific songs, but those tools operate at the track level rather than focusing on the persona fronting the music.

The timing of Spotify’s announcement reflects mounting pressure from the broader music industry to impose stricter rules on AI. In July, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), and other trade groups put forward proposals for standardized labels that would distinguish AI-generated songs from AI-assisted creations, seeking a common language for charts, services, and rights holders.

At the same time, major record firms  have urged chart compilers to exclude low-quality AI “slop from official rankings, arguing that flooding lists with synthetic music undermines both artists and listeners. Spotify itself has removed more than 75m such tracks in the year leading up to September 2025, a figure that underscores the scale of the problem the service is trying to control.
