How can an airline leverage technology to address coverage gaps that have limited inflight Wi-Fi over oceans and remote areas, with onboard network infrastructure intended to deliver more consistent passenger internet access across a mixed aircraft fleet?
Here is case study: Vietnam-based airline Vietjet is preparing to deploy satellite-based inflight internet across part of its fleet, aiming to extend passenger connectivity on domestic and international routes, including services between Singapore and Vietnam.
The initiative was announced on 24 September 2026, and it forms part of the carrier’s broader investment in digital services.
Inflight connectivity has traditionally been constrained by aircraft location, coverage gaps over oceans and remote areas, and the cost of installing and operating onboard networking equipment. For the airline, the challenge is to provide a consistent internet service across a mixed fleet while making access available without an additional passenger charge.
The initial deployment will cover 120 aircraft: 100 narrow-body aircraft and 20 wide-body aircraft. The airline said future aircraft deliveries are also planned to include high-speed connectivity. Its implementation is expected to include:
- Low-Earth-orbit satellite connectivity to provide broadband access during flight
- Network coverage intended to support routes over oceans, polar areas, and other remote locations
- Aircraft-installed terminals and onboard networking equipment for passenger Wi-Fi access
- Capacity for passengers to use work applications, messaging, web services, and streaming content
- Fleet-wide deployment planning across both current aircraft and future deliveries
The airline’s chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, said the service is intended to allow passengers to remain connected while traveling, including for work, entertainment, and communication with family and friends.
The airline has selected SpaceX’s satellite internet service as the connectivity provider. Tim Hughes, Senior Vice President, Global Business and Government Affairs, SpaceX, said the arrangement would extend the provider’s existing ground-based connectivity operations in Vietnam to the airline environment.
